Frequency Cap
What is ?
A frequency cap is a setting that limits the maximum number of times a specific user sees your ad within a given time period. It helps prevent ad fatigue, where users become annoyed or indifferent to an ad they have seen too many times. In Meta Ads, frequency caps are available through Reach and Frequency buying (set exact caps) and can be managed through bid strategy and audience size in Auction buying.
Example
A brand awareness campaign uses Reach and Frequency buying with a frequency cap of 3 impressions per 7 days. This ensures each person in the target audience sees the ad no more than 3 times per week. After testing, they find that performance peaks at 2–3 exposures and drops significantly after 5, confirming their cap is well-calibrated.

Rotate creative every 2–3 weeks to keep content fresh even within your frequency cap.
- 4
Set tighter frequency caps for cold prospecting audiences and allow slightly higher frequency for warm retargeting audiences.
