UTM Best Practices for Facebook Ads
Use Lowercase Only
UTM parameters are case-sensitive. "Facebook" and "facebook" are tracked separately. Always use lowercase to avoid splitting your data.
utm_source=facebook (not Facebook)Use Hyphens Instead of Spaces
Spaces in URLs become %20 which is hard to read in reports. Use hyphens or underscores to separate words.
utm_campaign=summer-sale-2026Be Consistent Across Campaigns
Create a naming convention and stick to it. Document your UTM taxonomy so your whole team uses the same values.
utm_medium=paid (not paid-social, cpc, or paid_social)Use utm_content for A/B Testing
When running multiple ad variations, use utm_content to differentiate them. This lets you see which creative drives the most conversions.
utm_content=video-v1 vs utm_content=carousel-v2Do Not Use UTMs for Internal Links
Only use UTM parameters for external traffic sources. Using them on internal links will reset the user session and attribute conversions to your own site.

What Are UTM Parameters?
UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are short text codes added to the end of URLs to track where website visitors come from and what campaigns brought them. They were originally created by Urchin Software (later acquired by Google) and are now the standard for campaign tracking across all major analytics platforms.
There are five standard UTM parameters: utm_source identifies which platform sent the traffic (e.g., facebook), utm_medium identifies the marketing channel (e.g., paid, organic, email), utm_campaign names the specific campaign, utm_content differentiates similar ads, and utm_term identifies paid keywords.
For Facebook Ads, UTM parameters are essential because Meta Ads Manager and Google Analytics attribute conversions differently. By adding UTM tags to your Facebook ad URLs, you get a consistent view of performance across both platforms, making it easier to compare Facebook against other channels.
Facebook UTM builder naming guidance
Google Analytics recommends using campaign parameters consistently and identifies source, medium, and campaign as core fields.
| Reference | Value | Context |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | facebook or instagram | Traffic source |
| utm_medium | paid_social | Marketing channel |
| utm_campaign | A stable campaign name | Campaign grouping |
UTM values are case sensitive in Google Analytics. A consistent naming policy prevents one campaign from splitting into multiple rows.
