Learning Phase

What is ?

The Learning Phase is the initial period after creating or significantly editing an ad set during which Meta's delivery system explores different audience segments, placements, and times of day to determine the optimal way to deliver your ads. During this phase, performance is typically more volatile and costs are higher (often 20-30% above stable CPA) because Meta is experimenting. The learning phase ends when an ad set accumulates approximately 50 optimization events (conversions, leads, clicks, depending on your objective) within a 7-day window. If it cannot reach 50 events, the status changes to "Learning Limited."

Example

You launch a Purchase-optimized ad set with a $30/day budget. Your average CPA is $15, so you expect about 2 purchases per day. At that rate, reaching 50 purchases takes 25 days, far beyond the 7-day window. The ad set enters "Learning Limited" status. You increase the budget to $100/day and broaden your audience, now generating 8 purchases/day. The ad set exits learning in 6 days with a stable $12 CPA.

Optimization Tips

  1. 1

Budget each ad set for at least 50 optimization events per week, multiply your target CPA by 50 and divide by 7 to find the minimum daily budget.

  2. 2

Avoid making significant edits (budget changes over 20%, audience changes, creative swaps) during the learning phase, as each edit restarts it.

  3. 3

If stuck in Learning Limited, consolidate multiple ad sets into fewer, larger ones to concentrate conversion data.

  4. 4

Consider optimizing for a higher-funnel event (like Add to Cart instead of Purchase) if you cannot generate 50 purchases per week.
