Campaign Spending Limit

What is ?

A campaign spending limit is Meta's own term for an adjustable limit on the overall amount your ad campaign can spend, set inside the campaign itself. Meta is explicit that although it doesn't affect your ads' delivery, campaign spending limits ensure that all the ad sets and ads in your campaign stop running once they've reached your spending limit, and you get a notification when that happens. That makes it a hard stop on top of your existing budget, not a substitute for one. Ads Manager has two other controls that are easy to confuse with it. An ad account spending limit is a flexible lifetime cap on the total money your ad account can spend across all ad campaigns you're running from the time you set it, so reaching it pauses every campaign in the account, not just one. Budget scheduling is a different feature again: Meta describes it as letting you schedule budget increases for a campaign or ad set based on days when you anticipate higher sales opportunities or other promotional periods, and notes that budget scheduling can only be used for campaigns with a daily budget. In the Marketing API, the campaign spending limit is the spend_cap field on the Campaign object, which Meta documents as a spend cap for the campaign, such that it will not spend more than this cap, with a minimum value of $100 USD (or approximate local equivalent); setting the value to 922337203685478 removes the cap entirely. Meta also notes that campaign lifetime budgets take the place of campaign spending limits once Advantage+ campaign budget is enabled, so the two do not stack.

Example

Meta's own example: you create a new campaign in Ads Manager and set a campaign spending limit of $35. As the campaign runs, its spend rises until it reaches that $35 limit, at which point all of the ad sets and ads in the campaign stop running and Meta sends a notification. To resume delivery you have to go back into the campaign and raise or remove the limit yourself, because spend does not resume on its own. Compare that with the account-wide version: Meta's own account spending limit example describes a $100 monthly limit, after which every campaign in the account pauses once total spend across all of them hits $100, not just the one campaign that spent the most.

Optimization Tips

  1. 1

Use a campaign spending limit as a safety net on new or experimental campaigns. Because Meta says it does not affect your ads' delivery, adding one costs you nothing in performance until the day it actually stops spend.

  2. 2

Do not confuse a campaign spending limit with an ad account spending limit. One stops a single campaign; Meta defines the other as a cap across all ad campaigns you're running from the time you set it, so hitting the account-wide version pauses everything in the account.

  3. 3

If you run Advantage+ campaign budget with a lifetime budget, remember Meta's own note that campaign lifetime budgets take the place of campaign spending limits, so setting both on the same campaign is redundant.

  4. 4

Do not confuse a spending limit with budget scheduling. A spending limit is a ceiling that stops delivery; budget scheduling, which Meta restricts to campaigns with a daily budget, temporarily raises how much you can spend during a high-demand window, up to 8 times the daily budget.

  5. 5

When a campaign or account stops delivering with no warning, check for a spending limit before assuming a policy problem. Meta's own account spending limit page says ads will still be listed as active in Meta Ads Manager even after the pause, which is exactly the mismatch that makes a spending limit easy to miss.
