Ad Rank

What is ?

Ad Rank is the score Meta assigns to your ad during the real-time auction that determines whether your ad is shown and in what position. It is calculated based on three factors: your bid amount, estimated action rates (how likely the user is to take the desired action), and ad quality (relevance, engagement, and policy compliance). The ad with the highest total value wins the auction, meaning you can outperform higher-bidding competitors by having more relevant, higher-quality ads.

Formula

Ad Rank = Bid Amount x Estimated Action Rate + Ad Quality Score

Example

Two advertisers compete for the same impression. Advertiser A bids $5 with a 2% estimated conversion rate and average ad quality. Advertiser B bids $3 but has a 5% estimated conversion rate and high ad quality. Despite the lower bid, Advertiser B wins because Meta calculates higher total value for the user experience.

Optimization Tips

  1. 1

Focus on improving estimated action rates by targeting the right audience rather than simply increasing your bid.

  2. 2

Maintain high ad quality by using engaging creative, relevant copy, and avoiding policy violations that reduce quality scores.

  3. 3

Monitor your Ad Relevance Diagnostics (quality ranking, engagement ranking, conversion ranking) to identify which factor to improve.

  4. 4

Test automatic bidding to let Meta optimize your bid amount dynamically for each auction.
