Ad Auction
What is ?
The ad auction is the real-time process Meta uses to determine which ad to show each user every time there is an available impression. Billions of auctions happen daily. For each impression, Meta evaluates all eligible ads and selects the one with the highest "total value", a combination of the advertiser's bid, the ad's estimated action rate (how likely this specific user is to take the desired action), and ad quality. This system balances advertiser goals with user experience, ensuring users see relevant ads.
Formula
Total Value = Bid x Estimated Action Rate + Ad QualityExample
When a user opens their Instagram feed, an auction runs in milliseconds. Three ads compete for the impression: Ad A (bid: $10, action rate: 1%, quality: high), Ad B (bid: $15, action rate: 0.5%, quality: low), and Ad C (bid: $8, action rate: 2%, quality: high). Despite having the lowest bid, Ad C wins because the combination of high action rate and quality gives it the highest total value.

Optimization Tips
- 1
You compete against all advertisers targeting the same user, not just those in your industry. Broad demographic targeting means more competition.
- 2
Improving ad quality and relevance can be more effective than increasing bids for winning auctions at lower costs.
- 3
Use automatic bidding when starting out. Meta will bid optimally for you based on your budget and objective.
- 4
Auction competition increases during peak periods (Q4 holidays, Black Friday). Plan budgets accordingly.
