How to Advertise on Threads: Complete Guide for 2026

Meta launched Threads ads broadly in 2024 and has been expanding availability and ad formats since. For advertisers already active on Meta's other platforms, Threads represents an additional inventory source within the same Ads Manager workflow, with some important differences in audience behavior, creative expectations, and where it fits in the media mix.

Threads Platform Overview

Threads is Meta's text-based social platform, launched in July 2023 as a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter). It's connected to Instagram, users log in with their Instagram account and can follow the same accounts they follow on Instagram. As of 2026, Threads reports over 300 million monthly active users, with particularly strong engagement among younger demographics and content creators.

The platform's feed is primarily text posts with optional images or videos. Unlike Instagram's visual-first feed, Threads rewards conversational, opinion-driven, and informational content. This distinction matters for ad creative, ads that look like Instagram feed creative often feel out of place on Threads.

Threads Ad Formats

Threads ads appear in the main feed, labeled "Sponsored." Available formats:

  • Image ads: Single image with text, headline, and CTA button. Supported aspect ratios: 1:1 (recommended), 4:5, 16:9. Maximum image size: 30 MB.
  • Video ads: Video with text overlay and CTA. Supported aspect ratios: 1:1, 4:5. Maximum video length: 60 seconds (15 seconds recommended for feed). Maximum file size: 4 GB.
  • Carousel ads: 2–10 cards with individual images, headlines, and links. Each card can link to a different URL.
  • Collection ads: Catalog-driven format showing a hero image/video with product tiles below. Requires a product catalog.

The primary text for Threads ads (the "post" text above the media) can be up to 500 characters, significantly more than Facebook and Instagram feed placements. This allows more conversational, contextual copy that matches the Threads posting style.

Targeting on Threads

Threads uses the same targeting infrastructure as Facebook and Instagram. All standard targeting options are available: interests, behaviors, demographics, custom audiences (website visitors, customer lists, video viewers), and lookalike audiences.

Threads is available as a placement within Meta Ads Manager, you can add it to existing campaigns by enabling it in the placement selection alongside Facebook, Instagram, and Audience Network. It also appears as an option within Advantage+ Placements, where Meta automatically includes or excludes it based on performance.

One targeting nuance: Threads' user base skews younger (25–34 primary demographic) and leans toward interest in culture, entertainment, and technology topics. B2C brands with younger target audiences tend to see better initial Threads performance than B2B or older-demographic brands.

Threads Creative Best Practices

Threads creative that works best mirrors the organic content style of the platform, text-forward, conversational, and opinionated rather than visually polished:

  • Write like a post, not an ad: Threads users scroll through text posts from people and brands they follow. Ads that read like natural Threads posts (conversational, direct, with a point of view) blend more naturally and drive better engagement than ad-style copy.
  • Lead with the text: Unlike Instagram where the visual dominates, on Threads the text above the image is seen first. Your copy hook is more important than your image, invest in the opening line.
  • Use image to complement, not carry: Images on Threads often underperform the same images on Instagram because the context is text-primary. Use images as supporting evidence (product photo, data visualization, before/after) rather than the main attention-grabbing element.
  • Avoid overproduced creative: High-polish brand imagery feels especially out of place on Threads, where organic content is dominated by casual phone photos and screenshots. Raw, authentic imagery performs better.

Threads vs Instagram vs Facebook: Where to Allocate

Threads should be tested as an incremental placement rather than a replacement for Instagram or Facebook spend. The key questions:

  • Is your audience on Threads? Check Audience Insights in Meta Business Suite for your target demographic's Threads usage. If your core demographic is 35+ with limited social media engagement, Threads reach will be lower.
  • Does your product fit a text-driven platform? B2C brands with story-driven products or services benefit more from Threads than ecommerce brands where product visuals are the primary conversion driver.
  • What are your Threads-specific CPMs? Threads inventory is less competitive than Facebook and Instagram, which can mean lower CPMs, but lower competition also reflects lower advertiser confidence in conversion rates. Test with 10–15% of Instagram budget before committing to dedicated Threads campaigns.
