Facebook Ad Placements: Which Ones Actually Work?
Founder at Adship

Where your ads appear matters almost as much as what they say. Facebook offers over 20 placement options across its family of apps and partner networks, and picking the wrong ones can send your CPMs soaring while your results flatline.
This guide breaks down every major Facebook ad placement, what each one is good for, and how to build a placement strategy that works for your goals.
Understanding Placement Categories
Facebook groups placements into four surfaces:
- Facebook: Feed, Stories, Reels, Right Column, In-Stream Video, Search, Marketplace
- Instagram: Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore, Shop
- Messenger: Inbox, Stories
- Audience Network: Native, Banner, Interstitial, In-Stream Video, Rewarded Video
When you select Advantage+ Placements, Meta's algorithm distributes budget across all eligible placements to find the lowest-cost conversions. Manual placements let you control exactly where ads run.
Facebook Feed
The classic. Facebook Feed is where most advertisers start, it's high-intent, supports almost every ad format (image, video, carousel, collection), and delivers consistent volume.
Best for: Conversions, lead gen, brand awareness, retargeting. Nearly every campaign type performs in Feed.
CPM range: $8–$25 depending on audience and vertical. Competitive, but volume is unmatched.
Creative tips: Square (1:1) or vertical (4:5) images and videos outperform landscape. Hook the viewer in the first 3 seconds. Use captions, 85% of videos are watched without sound.
Facebook Reels
Reels is Facebook's fastest-growing surface and consistently delivers the lowest CPMs on the platform, often 30–50% cheaper than Feed. If you can create short vertical video (9:16, under 60 seconds), Reels is where you find the best efficiency right now.
Best for: Brand awareness, top-of-funnel reach, DTC product demos, entertainment-style content.
CPM range: $3–$10. Inventory is expanding, which keeps costs low.
Creative tips: Native-style content wins. No branded overlays in the first second. Make it feel like organic content, then deliver the message.
Facebook Stories
Stories run full-screen between organic stories. They support both images and 5–15 second videos and are excellent for time-sensitive creative.
Best for: Awareness, flash sales, time-sensitive offers, app installs. Works especially well when paired with Instagram Stories for cross-platform reach.
Creative tips: Design for full-screen 9:16. Add a clear CTA overlay. Keep copy minimal, this is a fast-scroll environment.
Instagram Feed and Reels
Instagram placements are included in your Meta campaigns automatically. Instagram Feed tends to skew toward younger, visually-oriented audiences and performs well for lifestyle, fashion, beauty, and food brands.
Instagram Reels mirrors Facebook Reels in format but reaches a different demographic, typically 18–34, higher engagement with visual content, stronger influencer-culture alignment.
Best for: E-commerce, DTC brands, visual products, influencer-style creative.
Messenger Inbox
Messenger Inbox ads appear in the chat list above conversations. They can open a conversation with a bot, direct to a website, or show a full-screen experience.
Best for: Lead generation, customer service funnels, re-engagement campaigns. Particularly effective for businesses where conversational selling works well.
Caution: Messenger placements can feel intrusive. Lower volume than Feed. Test with a small budget before scaling.
Facebook Marketplace
Marketplace ads appear on the Marketplace home tab and in listings. Users browsing Marketplace are often in a buying mindset, which means purchase intent is higher than average.
Best for: Local businesses, physical goods, real estate, automotive, consumer products. The shopping context boosts conversion intent.
CPM: Often lower than Feed due to less competition. Worth testing for product-based businesses.
In-Stream Video
In-stream video ads play before or during video content on Facebook Watch and in the Feed. The viewer can skip after a few seconds. These require video creative, minimum 5 seconds, recommended 15 seconds.
Best for: Brand awareness, video views campaigns. Strong for reach at scale when video quality is high.
Creative tips: Deliver your core message in the first 5 seconds before potential skip. Brand early, hook fast.
Audience Network
Audience Network extends your campaigns to third-party apps and mobile websites outside of Facebook and Instagram. It's the cheapest placement by CPM, often under $2, but quality varies significantly.
Best for: Awareness campaigns where reach matters more than precision. App install campaigns. Not recommended for direct response unless you've tested it carefully.
Caution: Watch your post-click metrics. If landing page time is under 5 seconds on average, exclude this placement.
Advantage+ Placements vs. Manual Placements
Meta recommends Advantage+ Placements for most campaigns, and the data supports it, giving the algorithm more placements to bid on typically lowers your average CPM. But it's not always the right call.
Use Advantage+ Placements when:
- You're early in testing and want to find where conversions come from
- Budget is limited, the algorithm allocates efficiently
- Running awareness or reach campaigns
Use Manual Placements when:
- Audience Network is dragging down conversion quality
- You want Feed-only or Reels-only creative isolation for testing
- You need precise creative specs (e.g., Stories-only 9:16 vertical video)
- Reporting shows specific placements consuming budget with no results
How to Audit Placement Performance
In Ads Manager, go to Breakdown > By Delivery > Placement to see results split by placement. Look at:
- CPM: Which placements are cheapest to reach?
- CTR: Which placements generate the most clicks?
- Cost per result: Which placements convert most efficiently?
- Spend %: Where is Meta putting your budget?
If a placement consumes 15%+ of spend but delivers less than 5% of results, exclude it. Common culprits: Audience Network for direct response, Right Column for mobile-heavy audiences.
Placement Recommendations by Goal
- Conversions / Sales: Feed + Reels + Instagram Feed. Start with Advantage+, then exclude underperformers.
- Lead Generation: Feed + Messenger Inbox + Instagram Feed
- Brand Awareness: Reels + Stories + In-Stream Video + Audience Network
- App Installs: Advantage+ Placements (Meta knows where app installs convert)
- Video Views: Reels + In-Stream Video + Stories
- Local Business: Facebook Feed + Marketplace + Instagram Feed
