What is Ad Frequency?

Ad frequency measures how many times, on average, each unique person in your audience has seen your ad. It is calculated by dividing total impressions by total reach: Frequency = Impressions / Reach.

Frequency is a critical metric for campaign health because it directly impacts ad fatigue. When people see the same ad too many times, they stop engaging with it. CTR drops, CPC increases, and people may start hiding or reporting your ad, which further reduces delivery.

The sweet spot for most Facebook ad campaigns is a frequency between 1.5 and 3.0 for cold audiences. Retargeting campaigns can tolerate higher frequency (up to 5-8) because the audience already knows your brand. The key is to monitor frequency alongside CTR and CPC. If CTR starts dropping while frequency rises, it is time to refresh your creatives.
