Video Views (ThruPlay)

What is ThruPlay?

Video views in Meta advertising are a family of playback metrics, not one universal count. In Ads Manager, 3-second video plays count each time a video plays for at least 3 seconds, or for nearly its full length when the video is shorter than 3 seconds. Meta counts these plays separately for each impression and excludes replay time. A ThruPlay is a play to completion or for at least 15 seconds. That means a short video must finish, while a longer video reaches the threshold without necessarily reaching its final frame. These measures answer different questions: a 3-second play tests whether the opening held attention, while a ThruPlay tests whether attention lasted deeper into the creative. In Ads Manager, add video engagement columns at the campaign, ad set, or ad level and compare them with impressions, clicks, and the outcome the campaign is meant to produce. In the Marketing API, request fields from the ad account Insights edge. The current reference includes video_play_actions for starts, video_30_sec_watched_actions, video_avg_time_watched_actions, and video_p25_watched_actions through video_p100_watched_actions. Meta's official Business SDK also exposes video_thruplay_watched_actions and cost_per_thruplay. Percentage-play fields can include plays that skipped to the measured point, so they should not automatically be described as uninterrupted watching.

Formula

ThruPlay Rate = (ThruPlays / Impressions) × 100

Example

A team reviews a video that is longer than the ThruPlay threshold. In Ads Manager, it adds Impressions, 3-Second Video Plays, ThruPlays, Video Plays at 25%, 50%, 75%, 95%, and 100%, plus the campaign conversion metric. The opening earns many 3-second plays, but the count drops sharply before ThruPlay. The team does not call the creative successful based on starts alone. It moves the product benefit and proof earlier, keeps the same audience and optimization for a controlled retest, and judges the revision on both retention and the intended business result.

Optimization Tips

  1. 1

Choose the metric before judging the edit. Use 3-second plays to inspect the opening, ThruPlays to inspect sustained viewing, and the campaign result to decide whether the attention was commercially useful. A high view count cannot substitute for leads, purchases, or qualified traffic when those are the objective.

  2. 2

Use the exact Ads Manager column label or API field name in reports. Calling every playback a view hides material differences between video_play_actions, ThruPlays, 30-second plays, average play time, and percentage milestones. Record the definition beside any custom hook-rate or hold-rate formula.

  3. 3

Compare retention at the ad and placement level before editing creative. A drop can come from an opening that does not establish relevance, a format that fits one placement poorly, or a message whose payoff arrives too late. Change one major factor at a time so the follow-up result is interpretable.

  4. 4

Do not treat percentage fields as proof of continuous attention. Meta states that plays reaching a percentage can include people who skipped to that point. Pair those fields with average play time, clicks, conversion events, and qualitative review of the actual video sequence.

  5. 5

When using the API, pin the Marketing API version, request only the fields you need, and retain the returned action_type values. Field availability and naming can change between versions, so validate a reporting query against the current Ads Insights reference before relying on it in production.
