Split Testing (A/B Testing)

What is A/B?

Split testing (also known as A/B testing) is a controlled experiment where you compare two or more ad variables to determine which performs better. Meta splits your audience into non-overlapping groups, showing each group a different version of your ad. This eliminates audience overlap and provides statistically valid results.

Example

You want to test whether video or carousel ads perform better. You create an A/B test that splits your $50/day budget equally between two ad sets, one with video, one with carousel. After 7 days, the video version has a 2.1% CTR vs. 1.4% for carousel, with statistical confidence of 95%.

Optimization Tips

  1. 1

Test only one variable at a time, changing multiple elements makes it impossible to identify what caused the difference.

  2. 2

Let tests run for the full duration (at least 7 days) even if early results look conclusive.

  3. 3

Use the Meta Experiments tool for built-in statistical significance calculation and audience isolation.

  4. 4

Prioritize testing variables with the highest potential impact: creative format, audience, and optimization event.
