Primary Text

What is ?

Primary Text is the main body copy that appears above the media (image or video) in a Meta ad. It is the most prominent text element and serves as your primary message to the audience. On Facebook Feed, primary text displays up to 125 characters before being truncated with a "See More" link (though up to 2,200 characters are supported). On Instagram Feed, the limit is similar. Stories and Reels placements show minimal primary text overlaid on the media. Well-crafted primary text hooks attention, communicates the value proposition, and motivates users to engage with the ad.

Example

Short-form approach: "Free shipping on orders over $50. Our best-selling sneakers are back in stock. Shop now before they sell out." (106 characters, fully visible without truncation). Long-form approach: A 300-word customer story that starts with a hook ("I never thought I could run a marathon..."), builds emotional connection, and ends with a CTA, users who click "See More" are highly engaged.

Optimization Tips

  1. 1

Front-load your hook and value proposition in the first 125 characters since most users will not tap "See More."

  2. 2

Test short (1-2 sentences) vs. long-form (paragraph) primary text, different audiences respond to different lengths.

  3. 3

Include a clear CTA in the primary text itself, not just in the button, "Shop now at example.com" or "Comment YES below."

  4. 4

Use line breaks and emojis sparingly to improve readability and break up dense text blocks in longer copy.
