Facebook Audience Insights: Find Your Ideal Ad Audience
Founder at Adship

Targeting is the foundation of every successful Facebook ad campaign. The better you understand your audience (their demographics, behaviors, interests, and purchase patterns) the more precisely you can reach them with the right message.
Facebook Audience Insights (now integrated into Meta Business Suite) gives you a window into exactly who your potential customers are. This guide shows you how to use it effectively.
What Is Facebook Audience Insights?
Facebook Audience Insights is a research tool that lets you explore aggregate data about specific groups of people, whether that's people connected to your Page, a custom audience you've uploaded, or a broad interest-based group you define.
The original standalone Audience Insights tool has been sunset. The data now lives in Meta Business Suite under "Audience" and in Ads Manager under "Audience Insights" within the planning tools. The underlying data is the same, billions of data points on Facebook and Instagram user behavior, demographics, and interests.
What you can learn:
- Age and gender breakdown of your audience or any interest group
- Location data, countries, cities, regions
- Device usage, mobile vs. desktop, operating systems
- Page likes and interests related to your target group
- Activity levels, how frequently your audience engages on Facebook
- Purchase behaviors and household income brackets (US market)
Accessing Audience Insights in 2026
There are two main ways to access audience data today:
1. Meta Business Suite → Insights → Audience: Shows data about your existing Page followers: their demographics, top countries, cities, and age/gender breakdown. This is your "who already follows us" view.
2. Ads Manager → Tools → Audience Insights: The research tool. Enter an interest, behavior, or custom audience and explore aggregate demographic and behavioral data. This is your "who should we target" view.
A third source: the Ads Manager breakdown reports on live campaigns show you who actually saw and clicked your ads, often the richest data because it reflects real purchase intent, not just profile attributes.
Researching a New Audience From Scratch
Start with a hypothesis. If you sell project management software to small business owners, your hypothesis might be: "Our audience is 28–45, interested in entrepreneurship and productivity, likely follows Pages like Notion, Asana, or Inc. Magazine."
In Ads Manager Audience Insights:
- Open "Everyone on Facebook" as your starting population
- Filter by relevant interests (e.g., "Project management", "Small business")
- Check the Demographics tab, does the age/gender breakdown match your hypothesis?
- Check Page Likes tab, what other Pages does this group follow? This reveals adjacent interests and competitors your audience already engages with
- Note audience size, you want at least 500K for most campaigns, ideally 1–5M for scalable testing
Cross-reference what you find with your actual customer data. If your CRM shows customers skew female 35–50 but your interest audience skews male 25–35, dig deeper, you may need to refine the interest targeting or test separate audiences by demographic.
Using Your Customer Data to Improve Insights
Custom Audiences built from your own data are the gold standard for audience research. Upload your email list or customer CSV into Ads Manager as a Custom Audience, then use Audience Insights on that segment.
What this reveals that interest-based research can't:
- Which interests your actual paying customers have, not just people vaguely interested in your category
- The demographic profile of your highest-LTV segment (if you segment the upload by spend tier)
- Which Pages your buyers follow, direct input for interest targeting
Once you understand your customer audience, create a Lookalike Audience (1–3%) targeting people who share the same patterns. This is typically the highest-performing cold audience type on Meta.
Reading the Relevance Score and Affinity
When you look at Page Likes within Audience Insights, you'll see an Affinity Score next to each Page. Affinity compares how likely your target audience is to like that Page versus the general Facebook population.
High-affinity Pages are goldmines for interest targeting. If a niche industry newsletter has a 40x affinity score, meaning your target audience is 40 times more likely to follow it than the average Facebook user, targeting that interest can be extremely precise.
Low-affinity, high-volume Pages (like major news outlets) indicate broad overlap that's unlikely to improve targeting precision, skip these for interest-based campaigns.
Audience Insights from Live Campaign Data
Once your campaigns are running, the most actionable audience data comes from Ads Manager's Breakdown reports. Navigate to any campaign, click Breakdown, and select:
- Age and Gender: Which age/gender segments convert best at the lowest CPA?
- Country / Region: Are certain locations drastically outperforming?
- Placement: Which surfaces (Feed, Reels, Instagram) generate results?
- Device: Mobile vs. desktop conversion rates (critical for landing page optimization)
This data is more reliable than pre-campaign research because it reflects actual purchase behavior, not just profile attributes. Use it to refine targeting: if women 35–44 convert at half the CPA of other segments, create a dedicated ad set targeting that demographic with tailored creative.
Building a Targeting Strategy from Insights
A practical targeting framework based on Audience Insights data:
- Warm audiences first: Website visitors, email list, video viewers. Highest intent, easiest conversions.
- Lookalikes second, 1% LAL from your buyer list. Meta finds people who match your best customers.
- Interest audiences third: Use high-affinity Pages and behaviors discovered through Audience Insights. Test 3–5 interests simultaneously in separate ad sets.
- Broad audiences last: Age/gender only, no interest targeting. Let Advantage+ Audience find converters through the algorithm. This works best when you have conversion history (500+ events).
Revisit Audience Insights every 60–90 days. Audience behavior evolves, new Pages, shifting demographics, and seasonal interest patterns all affect what targeting works.
Common Audience Research Mistakes
- Targeting audiences that are too small: Under 200K often leads to frequency issues and high CPMs. Aim for 500K+.
- Stacking too many interests in one ad set: You can't tell which interest drove results. Test interests separately.
- Ignoring age/gender breakdown data: If one demographic converts 3x better, it deserves its own budget and creative.
- Using the same targeting for cold and warm audiences: Warm audiences should never compete with cold in the same ad set.
- Not refreshing targeting after creative changes: New creative can find new audience segments. Don't assume old targeting is optimal forever.
